A studio finally says it out loud: Danganronpa 2x2 moved to 2027 partly because of GTA 6

Studios have been quietly stepping around November 19 for months. This week one of them named the reason on the record. In an interview Crunchyroll published on August 3, recorded at Anime Expo 2026, Danganronpa 2x2 producer Shohei Sakakibara said the team wanted more development time and wanted to stay clear of a certain AAA or AAAA title arriving soon. Asked straight out whether he meant Grand Theft Auto VI, series creator Kazutaka Kodaka laughed and gave the blunt version: "I wouldn't have time to make the game while playing Grand Theft Auto VI, so it was inevitable that we moved the release time."

The delay itself is a few weeks older than the quote. Spike Chunsoft used its Anime Expo panel in early July to confirm that the expanded remake of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair slips out of 2026 into early 2027, and to show what the extra months buy: a new scenario called Slayhem, roughly 20 percent longer than the original story. The August interview adds the motive, which is the part studios normally leave to analysts.

Rockstar's date has been reshaping the release calendar since it was announced, and the confirmed moves mostly run away from November rather than into it. Forza Horizon 6 came out on May 19, Crimson Desert on March 28, Sony's Marathon on March 5, and Take-Two parked its own NBA 2K27 in September; Marvel's Wolverine also landed ahead of the GTA window. Danganronpa 2x2 jumps the other way, clearing the entire holiday quarter.

One piece of scale, because the headlines around this have been generous: Kodaka's line was a joke in an interview, not a business statement, and the reason his producer led with was development time. GTA 6 arrives November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version announced.
