GTA 6 budget, pre-orders and sales forecasts

Every money number in circulation about GTA 6 is one of four things: a Take-Two statement, an analyst estimate, a third party forecast, or history. This page keeps them labelled, because mixing them is how a guess becomes a fact.

The numbers, by what kind of number they are

Take-Two has never disclosed a development budget, and Strauss Zelnick, asked directly, would only say that it was expensive. What the company does publish is guidance, and the guidance is where the real scale shows.

Take-Two is guiding investors to $8.0 to $8.2 billion in Net Bookings for the fiscal year covering the GTA 6 launch, up from about $6.7 billion the year before.

Fiscal 2027 runs to March 2027 and the guidance assumes the game ships on 19 November 2026. It is a company forecast, not a result.

How long it has been in development

Rockstar confirmed the project publicly on 4 February 2022 and has never said when work began, so the only honest measure is the gap between releases: thirteen years and two months from GTA V to GTA 6.

What analysts estimate about the pre-orders

Rumor

Analysts put GTA 6 pre-orders at roughly 4.5 million and credit Rockstar's Extended Look with only a couple of hundred thousand of them. The figures come from M Science and Sensor Tower, both modelling third-party storefront data. Take-Two has never published a pre-order count.

The estimates, taken apart

Why the two billion figure keeps appearing

It comes from adding marketing, studio overhead and years of live service runway on top of the analyst spend estimate, and it is nobody's published number. Zelnick has confirmed the game was expensive and declined every specific figure put to him, and that is where the record stops.

Numbers move: guidance is revised every quarter, and the first real sales figures land in Take-Two's Q3 report in February 2027. Dates in the sources are when each one was last checked.

Frequently asked questions

How much did GTA 6 cost to make?

Take-Two has never said. The most cited estimate, from Business Insider in May 2026, puts the spend at $1 to $1.5 billion so far and is built on analyst guesses rather than company documents. Zelnick's only public comment was that it was expensive.

How many copies has GTA 6 sold?

None yet, it launches on 19 November 2026. Take-Two calls pre-orders unprecedented but refuses to publish a count, so the numbers around are models built on third-party storefront data: roughly 4.55 million pre-orders by the end of August, and a Newzoo forecast of about 51 million copies in launch week. Both are forecasts, and exactly the sort of number that later gets quoted as fact.

Is GTA 6 the most expensive game ever made?

On the analyst estimates, yes, by a distance. On the record, there is no confirmed budget to compare it against, because Rockstar and Take-Two have never published one for any of their games.

How much money will GTA 6 make?

Take-Two guides $8.0 to $8.2 billion in net bookings for the year to March 2027 across its whole catalogue, with GTA 6 the reason for the jump. The loudest third party number is Newzoo's roughly $4.5 billion in launch week. The first is a company forecast, the second is a model, and neither is a receipt.
