The game is set in the state of Leonida, a fictional take on Florida, centered on modern-day Vice City. Official locations include the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.

GTA VI has two playable protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Lucia is the first non-optional female lead in a mainline GTA game.
