Where is GTA 6 set? Leonida, Vice City and real Florida

GTA 6 plays out in the state of Leonida, Rockstar's Florida, with modern-day Vice City at its center. Every region Rockstar has named so far, the real place it echoes, and how solid each link actually is.

Leonida region by region

Base map is a community reconstruction from trailers and leaks, not an official Rockstar map. Region markers and descriptions are ours.
In Leonida Real-world echo How solid
Leonida Leonida Florida Confirmed
Vice City Vice City Miami Confirmed
Leonida Keys Leonida Keys The Florida Keys Confirmed
Grassrivers Grassrivers The Everglades Confirmed
Port Gellhorn Port Gellhorn Panhandle port towns: Panama City, Port St. Joe Community reading
Ambrosia Ambrosia Sugar country by Lake Okeechobee: Clewiston, Belle Glade Community reading
Mount Kalaga National Park Mount Kalaga National Park North Florida forest: Ocala National Forest and the Panhandle hills Community reading

Confirmed means Rockstar's own material ties the region to the real place. Community reading means the match comes from geography and atmosphere in the trailers and screenshots, not from anything Rockstar said.

Side by side: Leonida and Florida

The same subject twice: our in-game shot next to a photograph of the real thing. Same tower, same bridge, same reef, same airboat.

A state, not a city

GTA 5 gave you Los Santos plus a stretch of desert. Leonida is a whole state: neon beachfront in Vice City, swamp and airboat country in Grassrivers, an island chain in the Leonida Keys, a worn-out port in Port Gellhorn, refinery towns inland, and forest on the northern border. Rockstar's own site presents these as separate regions with separate economies, which is why the map reads less like a city with suburbs and more like a road trip.

Vice City has always been Miami

Vice City was Rockstar's Miami back in 2002, when the game lived in 1986 and ran on neon, pastel suits and Scarface. The 2026 version keeps the geography and moves the clock to the present. District names in official material give it away: Ocean Beach reads as South Beach, Little Cuba as Little Havana. If you're looking for the real Vice City, you're looking for Miami Beach and Downtown Miami.

Where Leonida stops being Florida

It isn't a one-to-one copy. Mount Kalaga has ridgelines and off-road hill country Florida can't really offer, the invented names (Gellhorn, Ambrosia, Kalaga) don't map onto any single town, and Rockstar blends several places into one region when it suits the story. So treat the bottom three rows of the table as an informed reading of trailers and screenshots, not an address book.

The confirmed part, sourced

The setting claims above trace back to Rockstar's own material. Map scale is the one number nobody official has given.

The game is set in the state of Leonida, a fictional take on Florida, centered on modern-day Vice City. Official locations include the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.

The map of Leonida is at least twice the size of GTA V's map, according to fan projections. Rockstar has not released an official map or any size figures.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vice City a real place?

No. Vice City is fictional but built on Miami: the beachfront, the causeways, the art-deco strip and the Cuban-American neighbourhoods all have direct counterparts. Rockstar has never claimed to model a real street grid, so the resemblance is geography and atmosphere rather than a copy.

Is Leonida a real US state?

No. Leonida is Rockstar's invented state standing in for Florida, the same way San Andreas stood in for California and Nevada. The name is new to the series; the geography, wildlife and economy are Florida's.

Which real cities appear in GTA 6?

None by name. Every place Rockstar has named is fictional: Vice City, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia. What you'll recognise are the originals behind them, Miami above all, plus the Keys, the Everglades and the Panhandle coast.

Is Los Santos or San Andreas in GTA 6?

Nothing official points that way. Everything Rockstar has shown sits inside Leonida, and no trailer, screenshot or store listing mentions a return to San Andreas. Treat any “both maps” claim as a rumour until Rockstar says otherwise.

Where is Vice City located in real life?

Vice City is fictional, so it has no address. The place it is located in, in every sense that matters, is Miami Beach and downtown Miami. The same applies down the map: Port Gellhorn in real life reads as the Panhandle port towns around Panama City and Port St. Joe, and the Leonida Keys are the Florida Keys. The GTA 6 location, as a whole, is the state of Leonida standing in for Florida.
