GTA 6 age rating and ID checks by country
The board rating is still pending. What changed in 2026 is not the rating but the age checks on your console account, and the two get mixed up constantly, so here they are apart.
The rating: pending, and what it will be
Rockstar's page and PlayStation's both list GTA VI as rating pending. PlayStation's page does note what the last one got: GTA V was rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB and PEGI 18 in Europe. Nobody expects softer, and the boards publish a final rating in the weeks before release.

Do you need ID to play?
Not for the game itself, anywhere. Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience, and no store has announced an ID gate on the purchase. What can ask for your age is the platform account, and that depends on where you live.
| Region | Board | Expected | Age check |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | ESRB | M 17+ | Not required |
| European Union | PEGI | PEGI 18 | Not required |
| UK and Ireland | PEGI | PEGI 18 | Required for PSN social features |
| Australia | ACB | R18+ | Required for R18+ online games |
Expected ratings are what GTA V carried on the same boards. None of them is a published GTA VI classification yet.

If you are in the UK or Ireland
Sony now asks adult PlayStation accounts in both countries to verify their age through Yoti, and an unverified account loses voice chat, messaging, parties and broadcasting while the games themselves keep working. Three methods are offered:
- A code sent to your mobile number.
- A photo of a passport, driving licence or national ID card.
- A face scan that estimates your age.

If you are in Australia
Six age assurance codes took effect on 9 March 2026 under the Online Safety Act, and they cover online games classified R18+, with penalties up to A$49.5 million per breach. Offline single-player is out of scope, which is why the GTA 6 campaign is not the pressure point; the online features that follow it are. Xbox began enforcing checks on Australian accounts in August 2026.
Written on 3 September 2026, while the classification is still pending. Ratings and verification rules both move, and this page follows them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the GTA 6 age rating?
Not published yet. Rockstar and PlayStation both show it as rating pending. GTA V was ESRB M 17+ and PEGI 18, and the boards usually publish a new rating a few weeks before launch.
Will I need to verify my age to play GTA 6?
Not to play the campaign. In the UK and Ireland an unverified PlayStation account loses chat and broadcasting features, and in Australia age assurance is required for R18+ online games, so the online part that follows launch is where it would bite.
Can a 16 year old buy GTA 6?
Storefronts enforce the rating on the account, so an account registered as under 17 in North America or under 18 in Europe cannot buy an M or PEGI 18 title on its own. That has been true of every GTA, and in most countries it is a store rule rather than a law.
Is GTA 6 banned anywhere?
No ban has been announced. Australia's R18+ category exists precisely so that adult games can be sold there, which is what previous GTA releases used.
