YouTube made graphic gameplay ad-eligible after the first 7 seconds, and much of the GTA 6 coverage read the change backwards
Google's log of ad guideline updates now carries two entries dated September 2026 that matter to anyone planning to upload Grand Theft Auto VI footage. The first: "We are updating our Violent Content guidelines to clarify content featuring graphic gaming content in the first eight to fifteen seconds will earn ad revenue." The second, on the same page: gaming and scripted content featuring the use, sale and promotion of recreational drugs is now eligible to earn ad revenue. YouTube names no game in either line. The games press attached GTA 6 to it because of the calendar: the game arrives on 19 November, and gameplay capture is what the platform will run on for months after.
Most of the coverage described a three-step ladder, nothing in the first seven seconds, limited ads from eight to fifteen, wider eligibility after that. That ladder is the old rule, not the new one. Read the live advertiser-friendly guidelines today and the eight-to-fifteen band is gone for games: the line "unedited gameplay violence occurring after the first 7 seconds" sits under content that can earn ad revenue, and the only gaming bullet left in the limited tier is graphic game violence in the thumbnail. The September note is phrased the way it is because that band is exactly what was lifted. UNILAD's 9 September piece, the one that lays the three zones out in most detail, credits an aggregator for them rather than YouTube.
What did not move is the part that costs money. Graphic game violence in the thumbnail or in the first seven seconds still earns nothing, and neither does gameplay "manufactured to create a shocking experience", which is to say the NPC massacre compilation. Sexual violence, graphic torture, violence motivated by hate, violence directed at minors or at real named people stay ineligible at any timestamp. For a GTA 6 creator the practical read is narrow and useful: the blood in the video is not the problem, the first seven seconds and the thumbnail are.
