Root has worked without a pause since the mid-1980s, and his name is less famous than his roles: Milton with the red stapler in Office Space, Jimmy James in NewsRadio, Monroe Fuches in Barry. On King of the Hill he voices both Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland, which is where a generation of players knows the voice from. In 2026 he was nominated for an Emmy for Widow's Bay, and it was that red carpet where GTA 6 came up.

Rockstar publishes no cast list and its performers stay quiet until launch, so a plain yes on camera is rare. Root gave one to the Associated Press on 13 September 2026 and explained why the secret was no longer worth keeping: his character was already in the first wave of marketing and too many people knew his voice. He never named the character, so the match to Brian Heder is the community's reading, not Rockstar's.
