Stephen Root confirms to AP that he is in the GTA 6 cast

The Associated Press caught Stephen Root on the carpet at the BAFTA TV Tea Party on 13 September and asked him outright whether he is in Grand Theft Auto VI. "You're gonna see me in there," he answered. The wire put the clip out on 14 September. Rockstar publishes no cast list and its actors almost never confirm a role before launch, so a plain yes on a red carpet is rare.

Root went straight on to explain why the secret was no longer worth keeping. "It's coming out November 19, from the latest that I know of. But I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing, maybe almost a year ago, they had my character in there. And there were too many people that knew me from King of the Hill and my voice. I think that secret kind of got divulged then." On that show Root is the voice of Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland, and fans picked him out of the GTA 6 material by ear long before this interview.

The character they matched him to is Brian Heder, the old smuggler from the Leonida Keys who lets Jason live on his land in exchange for a hand at the boat yard. Rockstar has had Brian on the Grand Theft Auto VI site since May 2025, and the Extended Look gives him a scene of his own: the rooftop table at Effluvia with Jason, Lucia and his wife Lori. Root never said that name to AP, so the pairing still rests on a voice rather than on a credit.

What he did say is that he has seen the game. "I'm so happy to be involved with it. It's an amazing thing to look at." He was on that carpet as an Emmy nominee for Widow's Bay rather than as a guest of Rockstar's, and the date he gave matches Rockstar's own: 19 November, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
