Zelnick says GTA 6 pre-orders skew to the $100 Ultimate, and Take-Two won't be the one discounting
Strauss Zelnick took the Grand Theft Auto VI pre-order question to CNBC's Squawk Box on Monday, August 10, and for the first time gave a shape to the number he still refuses to give. Asked which edition people are actually buying, the Take-Two boss said pre-orders are "skewing more to the premium edition", then attached the caveat in the same breath: "That might be a reflection of the fact that the most avid consumers are the ones who are pre-ordering now."
Read that second sentence, because a lot of the coverage dropped it. Zelnick did not say the $99.99 Ultimate edition outsells the $79.99 Standard. He gave no split, no percentage, no units. What he described is the mix in the first weeks of a campaign that runs until November 19, and he framed it himself as an early-adopter effect rather than a settled pattern. Headlines announcing that Ultimate has "surpassed" Standard are reading a great deal into one adjective.
The other new thing came when he was asked whether the price holds as Christmas approaches. Zelnick drew a clear line: Take-Two has established its pricing and intends to keep it, but storefronts sell at whatever price they like, and a retailer that cuts is cutting its own margin, sometimes to pull shoppers in for everything else it sells. So a publisher-side holiday sale is not on the table. A store promo is somebody else's decision, and it would not be a Rockstar price change.
He also went back over the $80 and $100 tiers with the longevity argument he used on the August 7 earnings call: "We've sold 230 million units and it's continued to perform through three console generations." That figure is Grand Theft Auto V's lifetime sell-in, confirmed in the Q1 report, not a GTA 6 number, and the two are now flying around the same articles. His framing has not moved either: the job is to deliver more value than the price, and given the hype around this title the company could have made any number of other pricing choices.
Then the line CNBC put in the headline. However great the anticipation is, Zelnick said, Rockstar needs to exceed expectations, and he believes it will.
None of this touches the calendar. November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S stands, and "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" still premieres on Netflix on August 27 at 3 p.m. ET before reaching Rockstar's YouTube channel and the official site at 9 p.m. ET. The words gameplay and Trailer 3 have still not been said by anyone official.
