Rockstar: GTA 6's boxed PS5 codes are region-locked, Xbox codes are not
Rockstar's GTA 6 support FAQ spells out that region restrictions on code redemption follow “the region associated with your platform account”, and the restriction lands on one platform only. About Xbox the same page says flatly that “codes purchased are not region-locked”. Push Square, Insider Gaming and AltChar all worked through the page on July 27.
On PlayStation the world is cut into nine redemption groups. North America covers the United States and Canada; the United Kingdom stands alone; so does Brazil, separate from the rest of Latin America (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay); Japan and South Korea each get their own group, as do Saudi Arabia and the UAE together; a rest-of-Asia bucket holds Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand; and one large EMEA group sweeps up most of Europe along with Australia, New Zealand, India, Israel, South Africa, Turkey and Ukraine. Rockstar's own advice is to buy from a retailer in the country your platform account belongs to.
The format is what turns a dry support line into a real trap. GTA 6 ships without a disc, so the box is the code and nothing else. Import a cheaper copy from another region, or grab one while travelling, and a PlayStation account registered elsewhere will not redeem it. If your country sits outside all nine groups, a boxed copy is not something a different store can fix. Rockstar has not explained why the two platforms are treated differently. Push Square's Sammy Barker read it as a symptom: “This is just a reminder of how messy the PSN is.” Japan carries a second restriction on top, the 170-day code expiry we covered on July 27.
