Rockstar: GTA 6 download codes in Japan expire 170 days after launch

There is one line in Rockstar's own GTA 6 support FAQ that no other region gets: “Product codes in Japan will expire 170 days after the issuance date, which is the launch date (November 19, 2026), due to regional regulations.” Count the days out and the deadline lands on May 8, 2027. GameSpot and VGC both picked the line up on July 24, and Rockstar has said nothing beyond the FAQ text itself.

What makes it bite is the format. GTA 6 ships without a disc, so the boxed copy is a sleeve with a download code inside. In Japan that means the box sitting on a shelf is a voucher with a clock running on it, and the clock starts at issuance, which Rockstar defines as launch day rather than the day anyone buys it. A copy that lingers in a store until spring 2027 hands its buyer whatever is left of the 170 days, not a fresh window.

Rockstar names “regional regulations” without naming the regulation. Outlets covering the story, among them TechSpot and Push Square, point to Japan's Payment Services Act, which treats prepaid codes as payment instruments and exempts anything valid for under six months from extra registration and deposit requirements; 170 days sits just inside that line. Reporting by VGC and Dexerto adds that the limit is Japan-only and lands on PlayStation codes, because Xbox codes carry no regional lock. The open question, which both GameSpot and Push Square say they put to Rockstar without an answer, is whether the expiry covers the full game code or only the pre-order bonus content.
