What Rockstar showed

7
  1. A modern-day return to Vice City

    Confirmed

The first trailer confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI returns to Vice City — Rockstar's take on Miami — but in the present day rather than the 1980s. Smartphones, livestreams and social media run through every shot, all set inside the wider state of Leonida.

  2. Lucia, the series' first female lead

    Confirmed

Lucia is the first female protagonist in a mainline Grand Theft Auto. The trailer opens on her leaving Leonida Penitentiary and frames her and an as-yet-unnamed male partner as a modern Bonnie and Clyde.

  3. Scored by Tom Petty's 'Love Is a Long Road'

    Confirmed

The reveal is set to Tom Petty's 1989 track 'Love Is a Long Road' — a song about a relationship full of ups and downs, hinting at the tone of the protagonists' story. Streams of the track surged on Spotify within a day of the trailer dropping.

  4. A world full of incidental life

    Spotted in trailer

Much of the detail lives in the background: beachgoers and influencers filming themselves, a street race being organised, mud-track ATVs, and — famously — an alligator wandering into a convenience store. Rockstar was signalling a world of systemic, emergent events.

  5. Leonida, from neon coast to swamp

    Confirmed

Rapid cuts established the geography fans now study frame by frame: the neon Vice City strip, the Leonida Keys, a highway chase along Interstate 404, and speedboats running off the coast.

  6. Dropped a day early after a leak

    Confirmed

Rockstar had set the reveal for December 5, 2023, but when the trailer leaked the night before, the studio simply published it officially on December 4 rather than fight the leak — a fitting start for a game whose every frame is now dissected.

  7. A record-shattering debut

    Confirmed

The trailer drew more than 90 million views in 24 hours — the most-viewed non-music video on YouTube at the time — and became the platform's most-liked game trailer. It was the clearest possible signal of unprecedented demand.
