Rockstar's official render is high enough resolution to read, and it is the most that has been said about Jason's past in any published material. The slide carries "J. DUVAL". The engraved grip panel reads "SUA SPONTE" in scrollwork, with a second, smaller line beneath it that the render does not resolve cleanly enough to transcribe. Sua Sponte, "of their own accord", is the motto of the US Army's 75th Ranger Regiment. The magazine floorplate is stamped "J D". The gun is finished in blued steel with a threaded barrel and an accessory rail.

Rockstar's own site says Jason "grew up around" people who "made their money in ways he'd rather not think about" and that "a stint in the Army" was supposed to be his way out. A Ranger motto engraved on his personal sidearm is the first time that stint has been pointed at a specific corner of the Army, even obliquely, and it fits the way he handles himself under fire in the Extended Look. Treat the biography as inference from a prop; Rockstar has published no service record.
